New Thinking On Wheelchair Handles

The first modern design of a wheelchair as we now know it was made in 1933. Over 80 years has passed and the wheelchair has evolved, with the use of lightweight materials and new technology.

But has anybody really stopped and thought about the people who push the wheelchair?

We all know that wheelchair handles are horizontal and in a rigid position. As anyone knows who has pushed a wheelchair, this position is uncomfortable as it puts pressure on the back, arms and wrists which over time can lead to medical problems such as pulled muscles.

So why has nobody come up with a design of some new wheelchair handles that makes it easier to control and push a wheelchair?

The manufacturer claims the design even makes it possible to push a wheelchair on sandy surfaces such as beaches.

The product is simply called “Wheelchairhandles” and is so simple in design that it will make you think “well, why didn’t I think of that” it’s certainly true in this case that the simplest ideas are the best.

The designers of “wheelchairhandles” say this handy device takes the stress away from pushing up steep hills and makes it easier to move across the bumpiest of terrains.

The handles allow for various types of grip including overhand, underhand and pistol grip.wheelchair handles pistol grip

The wheelchair handles are constructed from the toughest of polymer material which can withstand more than 800 lbs of pressure, as well as this, their covered in an antibacterial coating which can easily be cleaned with any household cleaning product.

The wheelchair handles are attached using three attachment points, so that they are able to fit 99% of all standard wheelchairs, although at this time. They don’t fit wheelchairs that have handled breaks.

But the fact is, do these wheelchair handles really make life easier when pushing a wheelchair?

According to the manufacturer they do

“Wheelchairhandles make pushing a wheelchair exponentially easier. Older individuals will appreciate the increased ease of generating momentum and directional changes.

People with both small and large hands will enjoy the additional comfort and people who are taller will love the improved positioning.Putting Wheelchairhandles on any wheelchair will dramatically improve the chair’s comfort and maneuverability”

The wheelchair handles are manufactured in the USA , although fast shipping all over the world is available.

So how much, are these fancy wheelchair handles!, I hear you ask

Well, according to their website it’s actually a lot cheaper than you might think the basic cost is $44.95

When you add shipping costs onto this it would still be a reasonable cost when you consider the benefit you would get from them, and they could last for years, or generations to come. If they really are un-breakable.

If you can think of any designs to improve wheelchairs or disabled equipment in general, then feel free to leave a comment.

This is a great idea as I regularly push a wheelchair. However, I have one basic question. Why do wheelchair frame manufacturers not include this extra upwards curve into the basic handle design? This would the automatically solve the problem for all wheelchair pushers without the need for accessories like this. Sorry if that sounds like an obvious question.

    Thanks for sharing.
